5 Steps to Efficient Cleared Job Search

As a job seeker, it’s important to know some basics about search on ClearedJobs.Net to help you find your next cleared job most efficiently.

Job descriptions vary widely and there are many ways to describe the same type of work. That’s why we recommend you start with a broad search. See what results are returned. Then narrow down the search as needed.

1. Keyword Search

If you know Boolean logic, you’re set. If you’re not familiar with Boolean searches, the key points to know when searching job descriptions and entering keywords:

  • If you enter more than one keyword separated by a space, it’s the same as entering the word OR between the keywords.

Java C++

You’ll get job descriptions containing Java, OR C++, or both keywords.

  • Put phrases in quotation marks for more targeted results.

If the keywords are a phrase use quotation marks. Search for “System Administrator” vs. System Administrator.

With the quotation marks your results will only contain job descriptions with the phrase System Administrator. Without quotation marks the results contain the word System, or the word Administrator, or both words together. It’s a less clean search that brings back results you don’t need.

  • Use AND to join keywords that are not a phrase for a more targeted search.

Java AND C++

You’ll get job descriptions containing Java and C++ for a more targeted search.

  • Parentheses separate part of your search so you can use both AND and OR in the same search.

(Instructor or Trainer) AND OCONUS

Companies may refer to training positions as Trainers or Instructors. Using parentheses cuts down the number of searches required if you’d also like to use AND in the same search.

For most job seekers don’t be too specific up front. Use a broad search that you then narrow down for the best results.

2. Security Clearance

If you select a clearance level such as TS/SCI, you will only get results for that specific security clearance level. You won’t get job descriptions with a lower clearance, nor job descriptions with a higher clearance.

If you’re looking for job descriptions with a security clearance level of TS/SCI or lower, select TS/SCI as well as Top Secret, Secret and Confidential.

3. Job Category

With most searches you should select the default All Job Categories. Many jobs come to us in a feed from employers and therefore may not categorize properly.

However, you should also select job categories that interest you and search without any keywords. You may be using different keywords than what’s found in a job description, yet the job may still be a good fit for you.

If you get too many job descriptions from this type of search, refine with keywords to reduce the number of search results.

4. Work Type

With most searches select All Job Types, due to the number of positions that come to us directly through a feed from employers. The information may be embedded in the text of the job description vs. being properly categorized.

5. Work Location and Work Location ZIP Code

These handy tools search for all jobs within a mileage range of an area. However, we often get jobs without ZIP Codes, so do not solely use this search function or you may miss a great opportunity.

For example you can search for any job within 50 miles of Washington, DC, or search for any job within 50 miles of a specific ZIP Code in Washington, DC.

You can also use Work Location in conjunction with Work Location ZIP Code.

If you’re close to a state border but you only want to work in one of the states — for example to search for any job within 50 miles of Arlington, VA yet exclude jobs in Maryland and Washington, DC — select Virginia as the Work Location in addition to entering a specific Virginia ZIP Code.
