Interview with a Recruiter, Susan Duer, RCT Systems

Posted by Rob Riggins

Susan DuerI joined RCT Systems, Inc. in October of 2015 as the VP of Intelligence Programs, Mission Systems Division. RCT Systems, Inc. is comprised of three divisions, Power Systems, ISR Systems, and Mission Systems. Both Power Systems and ISR Systems are headquartered out of our Linthicum, MD office. Mission Systems is headquartered in Herndon, VA and this is the division I support.

My focus is on growth within Mission Systems, which includes both business development and recruiting. Additionally, I also manage a few of our programs. Our work within Mission Systems is in the Washington, DC Metro area.

Why do I want to work for RCT Systems

RCT Systems, Inc. is a great small company. We are able to both pay our employees well and offer a competitive benefits package. We value our employees and work closely with them. Employees have access to senior management and we encourage open communication. We work closely with employees to ensure that their goals are met and that they are happy with both their job and the company. We understand that if we don’t take care of our employees, someone else will. Retention is very important to us.

Tell us about the hiring process with your company

We are easy to work with. We like for candidates to come in and meet with us so we can get to know them better. We want to understand what type of work and environment they are looking for and will work with them to find the right fit. Once a candidate interviews with us, we immediately get to work! We will start working on any necessary resume enhancements and will submit against current openings.  I’ve gone from interview to hire in as little as 2 weeks. The length of time it takes to be hired depends on a lot of variables but we work to make it as easy as possible for the candidates.

Do you target transitioning military

We always welcome the opportunity to hire transitioning military but I can’t say this is a specialty of ours.

RCT SystemsWhat types of cleared positions do you fill

We are always looking for strong software engineers and system engineers. We support many cyber security related programs so we are always looking for data managers, cyber analysts, forensic analysts, etc. If it’s IT related, we have a need. Most of our positions require a TS/SCI with full scope poly.

Do you use search engines or social media to screen job seekers at any point in the hiring process

No.

What are the toughest security cleared positions for you to fill and why

Nothing in this environment is easy. Filling our software engineer openings seems to be the most challenging on an ongoing basis. Also, while there is still a big need for senior talent, there is a push for more junior talent and that often proves challenging to find.

What do job seekers need to know about your job as a recruiter

Even if you are casually looking at opportunities, I want to talk to you! Oftentimes, it just comes down to timing. If we meet, I have an understanding about what you are looking for and what your salary expectations are, I can be looking for that right opportunity for you. As our environment is very dynamic, I’m happy to start the dialog before you are actually ready to move on.

I’m happy for job seekers to follow up with me however they are the most comfortable. Email is always great as I can read and respond at any time. I freely give out my cell phone number and am always happy to take calls also. Do you want to chat over coffee/lunch, that’s fine too. I know that it is hard to look for a job when you have a job, so I’m really flexible and will work with the candidates to make it as easy as possible for them.

  1. Dear Ms. Duer,

Saw your bio on clearedjobs.net. I’d love to schedule a 1 to 1 with you over coffee as I am searching to be a recruiter in the IT/cybersecurity/defense field. I have had 6 years of recruiting/staffing account management for a private security company called Guardsmark. What does your schedule look like over the next week or so? I can be reached at 703-851-xxxx. Thank you for your time.

    Sincerely,
    Shaw Skurnick

    1. Michea,

We do have entry level positions; however, they require an active security clearance. If you would like to send me a note to my corporate email, [email protected], we can talk further about your skills, clearance level or ability to be cleared.
