Pentagon Web site redesigned to appeal to younger audience
Government Executive reported recently that the Department of Defense has launched its new website www.Defense.gov to take the place of the former www.Defenselink.com which was geared toward an audience that was 45+. The new site includes many of the current social media tools to allow two way communication and involvement with a younger generation.
We took some time to tour the new site and found its heavy emphasis on offering various connection points across social media platforms to be very interesting and welcome. Steve Ressler, founder of Young Government Leaders and the social networking site for federal employees known as GovLoop, was quoted in the article as saying, “Defense is taking a big step in the right direction by offering visitors choices about how they connect. The new home page prominently displays links to subscribe to the Pentagon’s RSS Feeds, podcasts and widgets. It also invites users to “connect with us” via the DoDLive Blog, Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, UStream or YouTube.”
And speaking of podcasts, the library of video and audio podcasts available now on pentagonchannel.mil is *pretty impressive.* There’s something in there for just about anyone including Fit for Duty cardio workout episodes featuring servicemen and women to The Grill Sergeants, a weekly, half-hour cooking show featuring some of the military‚Äôs top chefs guiding viewers through step-by-step menu preparation.
Clearly, a diverse selection of connection points, a strong emphasis on the under 45 audience and a highly visible commitment to engaging through social channels were strong priorities for the DoD in the launch of this new site. There’s just so much to see and explore on this new site and definitely worth the time to visit and check it out! This entry was posted on Tuesday, August 25, 2009 1:40 pm
