This blog post recaps our bike team’s * Train of Pain * 5-day cyclo-tour in Southern California held on May 21, 2009.

The 21st of May marked the completion a 5-day cyclo-tour, known as of the Train of Pain (ToP). Sponsored by the Canari-Navy/ClearedJobs.net Cycling Club, this year’s ToP’s edition — now in its third year — was the largest and toughest yet!

Built tough

ToP III encompassed 25 riders and was supported by two drivers and a mechanic. The trip, which had its start and finish in San Francisco, rolled through some of the toughest roads and climbs in San Francisco, Marin, Sonoma and Napa counties, covered more than 480 total miles and included 33,000+ feet of climbing.

Background

Begun in 2007, the ToP has become a mainstay for the cycling club and this year hosted riders from across the country.  With the team’s close ties to the military, its membership includes active duty and retired Navy, Army and Marine Corps personnel from throughout the nation as well as from overseas. ToP affords both seasoned racers and less experienced riders the opportunity to complete a tough and challenging event.

Yearly competition

Each year, the ToP includes an unofficial competition that follows that of the Tour de France. Leaning on the hundred year tradition, special jerseys are awarded for the rides strongest rider, the best climber, and most consistent rider for the week. Additionally, a daily jersey is awarded for any significant event on that particular day.

This year’s winners included:

    • Greg Moore
    • Scott Duncan
    • …and Andrew Lee respectively.

There is also a keen competition between regions for the coveted team championship, and permanent recognition on the ToP perpetual plaque. This year’s team championship was won by the NorCal Assassins, who dominated the week with their strength and team work.

Teamwork

Teamwork was the theme for all the participants throughout ToP 2009 week. With the wide gap of experience and strengths, everyone was made to feel a part of the event.  In true sporting tradition, the riders and support were alike in their friendliness, regard for others, competitiveness and safety.

Next tour to benefit the Woulded EOD Warrior Foundation

The Canari-Navy/ClearedJobs.Net Cycling Club is currently working on their next event, a 2-day cyclo-tour in Southern California scheduled for early October 2009.

The ride will benefit the Wounded EOD Warrior Foundation, an organization dedicated to providing critical support to the Joint Service Explosive Ordnance Disposal community.

The Wounded EOD Warrior Foundation is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization that provides assistance to our Wounded EOD Warriors and their families in the form of financial relief.
