4,917,751 Individuals Hold a Security Clearance
There are interesting numbers to be found in the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) 2012 Report on Security Clearance Determinations.
As of October 1, 2012 4,917,751 individuals held a security clearance. It’s a snapshot in time, so the number is always changing.
The total for 2011 was 4,863,552, with an increase of about 54,000 year-over-year. The contractor numbers decreased by about 11,000 2011-2012, while the government numbers increased about 89,000. The other category declined year-over-year by about 23,000.
Other includes individuals who held or were approved for security clearances but could not be categorized from the available data. All CVS, JPAS and SC data that couldn’t be categorized by employee type fell in this category. The numbers:
The report also details for the Intelligence Community processing times, number of pending investigations, percentage of reviews resulting in a denial, and so on.
ODNI creates this report yearly as a result of the Intelligence Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2010, which requires the President to submit an annual report to Congress on the security clearance process.
