What a Cleared Job Seeker Should Do During the Shutdown
We asked Brigit Freedman, Talent Acquisition Director for Engility, for cleared job seeker tips to implement during the federal government shutdown.
Brigit’s shutdown tips:
- Build your LinkedIn network. It will help you more than you know!
- Set up Job Agent alerts on the company career sites where you want to work as well as on ClearedJobs.Net. You set alerts using keywords for jobs that interest you and that are in geographic areas of interest.
- Once you receive a Job Agent alert, immediately review the position and apply if you are interested.
Why apply immediately?
It gets you to the top of the recruiters queue. How does that help?
- OFCCP has mandated that employers review resumes in the order that they come in. First come, first served.
- If you find your keys do you keep looking? Same thing is true with hires!
But don’t stop there if you apply for a position! Reach out to your contact at the company. If you don’t know anyone look on LinkedIn to find someone in recruiting. Ask them to help get your resume noticed. Tell the recruiter the job title and requisition number so they can help you avoid getting lost in the shuffle.
Brigit adds, “Everyone in recruiting loves to help people! Just ask.”

I have submitted to so many sites, with so many promises, and that I am perfect for the position, but funding never comes. This has been going on since AUG2012. I have had so much ‘blue sky” blown up my rear that I have my own universe up there. I have given up on any contracts, even simple O&M contracts. The swamp is dried up. Somebody prove me wrong.
C. Turner,
Tons of companies are hiring. Has it slowed down? Yes – but from 2011 hiring paces — it’s just as busy today as it was in August. I just moved contracts in January of 2013 and still get offers from companies.
The Swamp is wet — even in this shutdown contracts are still out there. Check your list of credentials and fill in the degrees and certs where needed.
Best of luck.
I KNOW WHAT YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT!
…AFTER COUNTLESS JOBS FAIRS, ON-LINE APPLICATIONS, AND OTHER RECOMMENDED METHODS OF NETWORKING, A FULL-TIME POSITION CONTINUES TO ELUDE ME.
MY FAITH HAS KEPT ME GOING; THERE SEEMS TO BE VERY LITTLE SINCERITY ON PART OF TECHNICAL RECRUITERS, OR THE HIRING MANAGERS THEY ARE TRYING TO STAFF FOR.
NOW COUPLED WITH SEQUESTOR, NOW FULL-BLOWN GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN – AND ALREADY DISMAL SPEED OF HIRING WILL BE SLOWED EVEN FURTHER.
GOOD LUCK.
