Interview with a Recruiter, Scott Theobald, Perspecta

Posted by Rob Riggins

Scott Theobald joined Perspecta in October 2019 as a Sr. Technical Recruiter supporting the Defense Sector with primary focus to USSTRATCOM-Offutt AFB, Nebraska, USCYBERCOM – Fort Meade, Maryland and other programs as necessary.

Perspecta brings a diverse set of capabilities to our U.S. government customers in defense, intelligence, civilian, healthcare, and state and local markets. Our more than 270 patents are more than just pieces of paper, they tell the story of our innovation.

Why Perspecta

Perspecta’s culture of continuous learning, diversity of culture, the opportunities to engage with approachable leadership throughout the business, corporate social responsibility opportunities, military and veteran support and joining a large company with a small company feel all attract me to this company.

With offerings in mission services, digital transformation and enterprise operations, our team of 14,000 engineers, analysts, investigators and architects work tirelessly to create innovative solutions. We have expertise and experience not only to devise solutions, but to execute on them successfully. Everything we do, from conditioning innovative research to cultivating strong relationships, supports one imperative: ensuring that your work succeeds. Because what matters for our nation is what matters to us.

What’s Your Hiring Process Like

At Perspecta we know that without our team of exceptional talent, we couldn’t take on our nation’s most important work. We work with candidates to evaluate their passions and skills while aligning to the needs of our business. After speaking with a recruiter, candidates whose skill sets align with available opportunities typically experience two to three interviews with the business group. All offers of employment from Perspecta are contingent upon the candidates’ successful completion of the company’s background investigation.

Currently interviews and onboarding are performed virtually at this time. Perspecta has participated in virtual career fairs throughout the pandemic, however we’re excited to host and attend in-person events when the time is right. With the resiliency of our candidates and the growth of our business, I anticipate we will maintain a hybrid (virtual and in-person) approach to identifying top talent in the months to come.

What Are the Toughest Cleared Positions to Fill

We certainly have some diamond in the rough roles, which need a unique approach. With positions like MISO/PSYOP planners, we find that candidates may not have the 10 years of MISO planning work experience required. Adding in the JPME II certification and the CI Poly security clearance is challenging, but not impossible. Another unique role includes opportunities for Cyber Joint Operations Planners, which require Joint Planning experience and JPME II with a CI Poly. Lastly, Space System Engineers can be tricky because we require space domain work experience as well as a TS/SCI security clearance.

Overall, the positions supporting USCYBERCOM are the most challenging because of the unique skillsets required, the high-level security clearance (i.e. TS/SCI CI Poly), and the limited number of candidates that possess both the skillsets and security clearance. All high-level security cleared positions are challenging to fill due to the limited number of candidates that have these clearances.

What Can Job Seekers Often Do Better

It’s important for candidates to provide contact information (i.e. phone number and/or email address), know when their security clearance was adjudicated, and most importantly be available to talk to a recruiter. Many candidates with security clearances work in a sensitive compartmented information facility (SCIF) and are unable to bring a cell phone into the workspace, so planning ahead for interviews is paramount.

Are Your Current Openings Remote or In-Person

Perspecta’s opportunities range in their work location. We have a hybrid approach to our current openings. Candidates are able to determine telecommute options through careers.perspecta.com for each role. Generally speaking, we are looking forward to a time when we can partner in-person again.
