The True Purpose of Memorial Day

Posted by John Nixon

Gen. James F. Amos lays a commemorative coin in front of the Iron Mike monument in the heart of the Belleau Wood forestDuring this upcoming three day weekend, as we gather at barbeques, parks, beaches and other places of leisure, I would ask that we all take a moment to remember why it is that we have this particular extra day to enjoy. Let us not do so somberly but proudly….let us honor all our fallen Veterans.

When we read news reports of the conflicts around the globe we can see that they are now smaller, however make no mistake; we have Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines in harm’s way every day. They do this voluntarily for the love of country. And over these past 240+ years, many have given their lives in defense of our culture and freedoms.

So as we prepare to begin this three day weekend I encourage you to go to a cookout, with friends and family, attend a parade, and thoroughly enjoy this time off.

But again this year, like every Memorial Day, please join me in taking a few moments to remember all of these brave service members who have laid down their lives for us. We owe it to them never to forget.

  1. Well said, sir! We will never forget those who have given the ultimate sacrifice or those who continue to serve this great nation!
